HP Announces Applied Materials' Selection Of HP Software As Standard For 3-D CAD And Product-Data Management.Software Allows Applied Materials to Cut Product Development Times for Faster Time to MarketPalo Alto, California. February 8, 1996 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that Applied Materials, Inc., has selected HP PE/SolidDesigner and HP WorkManager as its standard software for 3-D mechanical CAD and product-data management. The agreement also expands the role of HP as a strategic vendor to Applied Materials, providing enterprise-level server computers, workstations, 3-D CAD, PDM, Workflow, e-mail backbone, and network management and administration software. The agreement is valued at about $9.1 million over the next 12 months. The selection of HP software is part of Applied Materials' continual effort to improve customer satisfaction by shortening development cycle times and increasing the quality of its products. HP PE/SolidDesigner is a 3-D product-modeling design system that provides the geometric model needed by design workgroups in decentralized product-development environments. The system's dynamic modeling approach gives the designer the freedom to make changes at any time and at any stage of product development without depending on the history of the product design. HP WorkManager is an enterprise product-data- and workflow-management system from HP's Work Management Operation. HP Work Manager coordinates the entire product design and manufacturing life cycle -- from the initial bill of materials and drawings, to the review and approval process, to prototype management and integration of applications. "Looking forward, all new engineering projects are expected to use 3-D CAD," said Mark Dunkle, information systems and technology program manager at Applied Materials. "HP's SolidDesigner gives us excellent 3-D design capability and the ability to use data from other CAD systems to create 3-D solid models. Integration with HP WorkManager provides us with a complete system for sharing designs, along with related test results and project information, throughout Applied Materials. We'll be able to cut product development times and ultimately deliver new products to our customers faster." The HP solution will be implemented at Applied Materials by HP and Visionary Design Systems (VDS), a systems integrator based in Sunnyvale, Calif. "VDS is helping us roll out solid modeling and product-data management, with training and services in our engineering, manufacturing and information technology groups," said Dunkle. "Their service and support will help us reach our goals quickly." "We are delighted to be working with a quality company like Applied Materials, " said Tilman F. Schad, general manager of HP's Software Business Unit. "Applied made it clear from the start that they needed a system that provided enterprisewide capabilities plus the ability to shorten development cycle times. We are extremely confident that by working together, HP and Applied Materials can meet these needs with HP SolidDesigner and HP WorkManager." Applied Materials, Inc., is a global growth company and the world's largest supplier of wafer fabrication systems and services to the global semiconductor industry. Applied Materials is traded on the NASDAQ National Market under the symbol, "AMAT." HP's Mechanical Design Division develops 2-D and 3-D mechanical computer-aided design software, called Precision Engineering Systems, known for quality, ease of use, customization capability and support of industry standards. These products are installed on more than 57,000 systems in design, engineering and manufacturing organizations worldwide and are localized in 10 languages. The software includes HP PE/SolidDesigner for product-modeling design; HP PE/ME10 for 2-D design, drafting and documentation; HP PE/ME30 for 3-D modeling; HP PE/DDS-C for electromechanical design; and HP WorkManager for product-data and workflow management. HP is the second-largest computer supplier in the United States, with computer-related revenue of $25.3 billion in its 1995 year. Hewlett-Packard Company is a leading global manufacturer of computing, communications and measurement products and services recognized for excellence in quality and support. HP has 102,300 employees and had revenue of $31.5 billion in its 1995 fiscal year. Information about HP and its products can be found on the World Wide Web at http://www.hp.com. |
